What you will need
- Red spiritual candle
- Rose or cinnamon oil
- Dried rose petals or chilli flakes
- Dragon's blood or rose incense
- A piece of red or white paper
- A red pen
- A fireproof holder
- A glass of water
- A photo (optional)
For love: use rose petals and rose oil. For courage and action: use cinnamon oil and chilli flakes.
Phase 1 - Awaken your energy
- Red rituals begin with the body, not just the mind. Before setting up your space, do something physical, a brisk walk, deep stretches, or even cold water on your face and wrists. The red candle works with your life force, and that force needs to be alive and moving in you first.
- Clean and prepare your space. Light your dragon's blood or rose incense and carry it through the room. Dragon's blood is a powerful activator, it amplifies every intention it touches, making it ideal for red candle work.
- If working for love, scatter dried rose petals around the base of where your candle will sit, forming a loose circle. If working for courage or action, sprinkle a pinch of chilli flakes around the base instead, heat activates fire energy.
Phase 2 - Charge the candle
- Hold the red candle at your chest level, over your heart. Close your eyes and feel the heat already within you, your heartbeat, your breath, the warmth of your skin. The red candle is an extension of this; you are not asking for fire from outside, you are drawing your own fire outward.
- Dress the candle with rose oil (for love) or cinnamon oil (for courage and action), rubbing from the base upward to the wick, drawing your desired energy toward you. Press your intention into every stroke. Feel it, don't just think it.
- Using a pin, nail, or toothpick, carve one word or a short phrase into the candle, your core intention. For love: a name, or "passion". For courage: "I am unbreakable". For action: "I move now". This carving anchors your will directly into the candle.
Phase 3 - Write your petition
- On your paper using a red pen, write your petition in present tense with emotion and certainty. Examples by focus:
Love: "The passion between [name] and I is deep, real, and growing stronger every day."
Courage: "I face every challenge with strength, boldness, and an unshakeable spirit."
Action: "I move forward with clarity, fire, and unstoppable purpose. My new beginning starts today."
- If working for love, write the petition in a spiral, starting from the outside and moving inward toward the center. This draws the person or feeling toward you. For courage and action, write in a straight, bold line, directional and decisive.
- If using a photo, of yourself (for inner strength) or of the person you are working for (for love), place it face up beneath the candle holder. Place your folded petition on top of the photo, then set the candle over both.
Phase 4 - Light and declare
- Light the candle. The moment the flame rises, place both hands on either side of it (safely, without touching) and feel the warmth. This is your fire, your passion, your will, your courage, made visible. Stay with that feeling.
- Speak your declaration aloud, three times, with fire in your voice. Do not whisper, red candle work responds to boldness. Choose what fits your intention:
For love: "By this red flame I call passion, connection, and deep love into my life. What is meant for me cannot be kept from me."
For courage: "I am strong. I do not bend. I do not break. Every obstacle in my path becomes the foundation I stand on."
For action: "Stagnation ends today. I rise, I move, I begin. The fire in me cannot be stopped."
- Sit with the candle for 15-20 minutes. Let yourself feel the emotion fully, the longing, the determination, the excitement of what is coming. Red candle work is fuelled by emotion. Do not suppress it; channel it into the flame.
Phase 5 - Close and carry forward
- Snuff the candle, do not blow it out. As you snuff it, say: "The fire does not go out, it moves into the world to do its work." This frames the snuffing not as an ending but as a release.
- Repeat for 3 or 7 consecutive days. Red candle work builds momentum, each night the energy compounds. On the final night, let the candle burn completely down if it is safe to do so, signalling that the work is fully released into motion.
- Keep the petition paper in a safe, private place, a drawer, a journal, or beneath your pillow, until the intention manifests. For love workings, you may also keep a rose petal from the ritual with the paper. Once your desire has come to pass, burn or bury the paper with gratitude.
- In your daily life between sessions, act as if the fire is already yours. Take one bold action each day, however small, that is aligned with your intention. The red candle rewards those who move; it amplifies action already in motion.
Best timing: Perform on a Tuesday (Mars's day, rules passion, drive, courage, and war against obstacles) or Friday (Venus's day, rules love, desire, and attraction). The waxing moon is ideal for drawing love and building strength. Perform at sunset or in the evening when the day's energy is transitioning and the heart is most open.
A few deeper notes on working with the red candle:
The emotion is the fuel. Unlike the white candle (which calls for calm surrender) or the black candle (which calls for firm authority), the red candle is fed by feeling. Longing, determination, excitement, love, let yourself feel these fully during the ritual. Suppressing emotion here weakens the working. Let the flame reflect what is burning inside you.
Reading the flame: A tall, dancing red flame is a very strong sign, high energy, fast movement toward your goal. A crackling flame means obstacles exist but are being burned through. A flame that leans in one direction points toward where the energy is moving, toward a person, a place, or an opportunity. A weak or low flame means your energy or belief needs rebuilding; rest, eat well, and try again.
For love workings, an important distinction: The red candle strengthens genuine connection and deepens existing emotional bonds. It works best when there is already a real foundation between two people. Use it to reignite, deepen, and draw, not to force or override another person's will. The most powerful love workings always begin with working on yourself first.
For the 7 day working: Each night before relighting the candle, do something that embodies your intention, write in a journal about the courage you showed that day, take one step toward your goal, or simply sit and feel grateful for the love already present in your life. Ritual and action together are unstoppable.
