What you will need
- Silver ritual candle
- Jasmine or moonflower oil
- Mugwort (dried herb)
- White sage or frankincense incense
- A silver or white bowl of water
- Moonstone or selenite crystal
- Silver or white paper
- A silver pen
- Sea salt or moon salt
- Fresh or dried white flowers
- A dream journal
- A small mirror or scrying bowl
- A fireproof holder
For dream work: place dried mugwort beneath your pillow after the ritual, it is the most universally recognised dream opening herb. For purification: use moon salt (sea salt left in moonlight overnight). For divination: place your tarot, oracle cards, or scrying tool on the altar and pass the silver candle's smoke over it.
Phase 1 - Call the moon into your space
- The silver candle is the candle of the Moon in its fullest expression, the divine feminine, the tides of the inner world, the light that reveals without blinding. This ritual is ideally performed at night, with the actual moon visible if possible. Before setting up, go outside and look at the moon, whatever phase she is in. Acknowledge her. Say simply: "I see you. I am working tonight under your light." If the moon is not visible, stand in the open air for a moment and feel the night around you. The moon's influence does not require direct sight.
- Prepare your space with lunar softness, moonlight or candlelight only, no harsh overhead lighting. Place white flowers on the altar if you have them. White flowers, jasmine, gardenia, white rose, white lily, are the moon's flowers, blooming and releasing their scent most fully at night. Their presence in the ritual is an invitation to the moon's energy and to the feminine wisdom this candle carries.
- Prepare your silver or white bowl of water. If you have moon charged water, water left beneath moonlight overnight, use it here. Otherwise, add a pinch of sea salt and a small piece of selenite to the bowl. Selenite is crystallised moonlight in mineral form; it charges the water with lunar energy and keeps it energetically clear. Place the bowl directly in front of the candle where the silver flame will reflect on its surface throughout the ritual.
- Light your white sage or frankincense incense. For purification work, pass the smoke over every part of your body from feet to crown, slowly, intentionally, as if washing yourself in silver smoke. This is the ritual bath before the ritual. The silver candle works on the aura, the energetic field surrounding the physical body and the incense smoke cleanses that field so the candle's healing can penetrate without obstruction.
- Hold your moonstone or selenite crystal in both hands and close your eyes. Moonstone is the silver candle's stone, literally formed by the compression of reflected light, carrying the moon's full energy in mineral form. Feel its cool, smooth surface. In many traditions, holding moonstone before sleep or ritual activates the dreaming mind and opens the channel to intuitive knowing. Let it warm slowly in your hands as you breathe.
Phase 2 - Prepare and charge the candle
- Hold the silver candle up toward the night sky, or toward the window, for a moment before dressing it. This gesture of offering the candle to the moon is one of the oldest acts in lunar ritual practice across many traditions. You are not performing a ceremony; you are making a connection. The candle goes from your hands to the moon's light and back, charged with that connection.
- Dress the candle with jasmine or moonflower oil from base to wick, drawing in dreams, intuition, healing, and wisdom. Jasmine is the moon's most devoted plant ally, it opens at night, releases its deepest fragrance in darkness, and has been used in lunar and feminine spiritual practices across Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean for thousands of years. As the scent reaches you, let it soften the boundary between your waking mind and the deeper knowing beneath it.
- Sprinkle dried mugwort loosely around the candle base. Mugwort is the silver candle's most important herbal companion, it has been the sacred dream herb of witches, healers, shamans, and seers across virtually every culture that has ever worked with plant medicine. It opens the dreaming channel, clarifies visions, enhances all forms of divination, and gently dissolves the energetic barriers between ordinary waking consciousness and the deeper realms the silver candle illuminates.
- For divination work: place your tarot deck, oracle cards, pendulum, or scrying tool on the altar beside the candle. Pass the candle slowly over them, not touching, three times. Say: "These tools are cleansed and opened. The veil between knowing and not knowing grows thin. What comes through them tonight comes from truth." The silver candle activates divination tools in the way that moonlight activates crystals, it doesn't add something foreign, it draws out what was always there.
- Carve your intention into the candle. For dream work: a crescent moon, or the word "remember". For purification: a downward pointing triangle, the ancient symbol of water and the feminine, releasing downward. For divination: an eye within a circle, or the word "reveal". The silver candle's carvings should feel like they belong to the night, keep them lunar, simple, and instinctive.
Phase 3 - Write your petition in moonlight
- On your silver or white paper, write your petition by the light of the candle only, no other light source. This is not simply aesthetic; the act of writing by candlelight in near darkness shifts the brain into a slightly altered, more receptive state. The silver candle writes best in conditions that mirror the moon itself: low light, soft focus, the sense that the ordinary world has receded slightly.
Dream work and intuition: "My dreaming channel is open, clear, and deep. I remember my dreams with clarity and I understand their meaning. Nightmares and disturbances no longer visit my sleep, what comes to me in the night comes as wisdom, healing, and guidance. My intuition speaks clearly and I trust what I hear."
Purification and bad omens: "Every negative attachment, bad luck, and ill omen that has clung to my energy field, my life, and my path is dissolved now in the silver light of this flame. I am cleansed. My aura is clear, luminous, and sealed. What is mine comes easily. What is not mine cannot find me."
Divination and inner wisdom: "The wisdom I carry in my soul rises now to meet my waking mind. My divination practice deepens into true sight. I read not with my eyes but with the older knowing beneath them. The veil grows thin and what I seek to understand becomes clear."
After writing, draw a crescent moon above your petition and a full circle below it, crescent for the mystery of what is becoming, full circle for the wholeness of what is. This frames your intention within the full lunar cycle: from seeking to receiving, from question to answer, from darkness to illumination. Fold the paper once toward you and place it beneath the candle holder on the mirror or scrying bowl if using one.
Phase 4 - Light and enter the lunar space
- Light the silver candle. Watch its flame, silver candle flames often carry a distinctly cooler, more luminous quality than other candles, with a blue silver shimmer at the base. This is the moon's colour: not the hot gold of the sun but the cool, clear light that does not burn, only reveals. Let your eyes soften as you watch it.
- Place both hands palm up in your lap, the receiving position. This is the posture of the silver candle's working. Every other candle in this series asks you to reach, build, release, or command. The silver candle asks you to receive. Open your hands. Open your awareness. Let the moonlight, visible outside or felt inwardly, move through you without resistance.
- Speak your declaration three times in a soft, unhurried voice, almost a whisper. The silver candle speaks at the volume of intuition, not proclamation. Let your words feel like something you are remembering rather than something you are demanding:
Dream work & intuition: "By this silver flame and by the sacred light of the Moon, I open every channel of dream and knowing within me. The night is my teacher. My sleep is my sanctuary. I receive what is sent to me in the dark and I carry its wisdom into the light."
Purification and bad omens: "By this silver flame and by the cleansing power of moonlight, I release every dark attachment, every ill omen, every fragment of bad luck that has gathered in my energy field. The Moon draws the tide out and with it goes everything that was never mine to carry. I am luminous. I am clear. I am free."
Divination and inner wisdom: "By this silver flame I awaken the seer in me. The inner knowing that has always been present rises now to the surface. I trust what I see in the cards, in the water, in the silence. The wisdom of my soul and the wisdom of the Moon are the same wisdom and I am listening."
- Gaze into the silver bowl of water. The silver candle's reflection on the water's surface creates a second flame, a mirror flame in the water, the moon's reflection on the lake. This double flame image is the heart of the silver candle's scrying practice. Soften your eyes completely. Breathe slowly. Do not look for anything, simply look. Notice the quality of the light, the movement of the reflection, and most importantly, the images, feelings, or knowing that arise in your inner awareness as you gaze. These are the silver candle's answers. Write them in your journal immediately after, before they fade.
- For dream work: after the water gazing, lie down briefly, if your ritual space allows, with the candle burning safely nearby and your moonstone crystal placed on your forehead or chest. Close your eyes and let yourself drift toward the edge of sleep without crossing it. In this threshold state, neither asleep nor fully awake, the dreaming mind activates and the silver candle's channel opens most completely. Any impressions that come in this state are among the most significant of the entire ritual. Write them immediately when you return to full waking awareness.
- Sit with the candle for a full 20-30 minutes. During this time you may work with your divination tools if that is your focus, the silver candle burning beside a tarot or oracle reading amplifies the clarity and depth of every card that appears. Ask one question only. Draw slowly. Trust what you see before you try to understand it.
Phase 5 - Seal in the lunar light and close
- Before closing, take the moonstone or selenite crystal and pass it three times through the silver candle's smoke, charging it with the ritual's energy. This stone now carries the full intention of the working and will continue the ritual's influence on your energy field as you sleep. Place it beneath your pillow, on your nightstand, or on your chest as you go to sleep tonight.
- Take a small handful of dried mugwort and place it in a cloth or paper sachet. Add a few drops of jasmine oil. Close or tie it and place it beside the candle for the remaining ritual time, allowing the candle's energy to infuse it. This becomes your dream sachet, place it beneath your pillow every night during the ritual cycle. The mugwort sachet is one of the oldest and most widely documented tools for vivid, meaningful, and remembered dreaming across cultures.
- Snuff the silver candle, gently, as you would lower a voice rather than end a conversation. Say: "The flame rests. The moon continues. What was opened tonight stays open. What was revealed tonight stays known." Then sit in darkness for three full minutes before turning on any light. The silver candle's closing is in the dark, let your eyes adjust to it, let the transition from ritual to ordinary reality be slow and unhurried.
- Repeat for 3, 7, or 9 consecutive nights. Keep your dream journal open on your nightstand every night of the cycle and write in it the moment you wake, before speaking, before checking your phone, before your feet touch the floor. The silver candle's most significant communications arrive in the earliest waking moments, and they dissolve within minutes if not captured immediately.
- Pour the bowl of water outside under the night sky, ideally directly onto the earth or into a garden. Say as you pour: "I return what the moon gave, with gratitude. The cycle continues." For purification work, pour it at a crossroads or running water source to carry away what was cleansed from your field. Never pour purification ritual water back inside the home.
- After the final night of the cycle, take the petition paper and the dried herbs from around the candle and bury them at the base of a tree that grows near water if possible, a willow, a silver birch, or any tree beside a river, pond, or stream. These are the moon's trees, growing at the edge between land and water, between the visible and the hidden world. Return your intention to the earth with gratitude, and leave the rest to the moon.
Best timing: Perform on a Monday (Moon's day, the silver candle's ruling day without exception) at or after nightfall. The full moon is the most powerful single night for silver candle work, the channel between the dreaming world, the intuitive self, and the divine feminine is fully open. The new moon is equally powerful for purification and new dream channel openings. The waxing crescent is ideal for building and deepening intuition over the ritual cycle. If possible, perform the ritual where moonlight can fall on or near your altar, moonlight touching the candle, the water bowl, or your own skin during the ritual is considered a direct blessing and a sign that the Moon herself has accepted your working.
Some deeper wisdom for working with the silver candle:
The silver candle is the most mystical candle in this entire series. Every other candle works primarily in the waking world, drawing things in, pushing things out, building foundations, healing wounds that can be named. The silver candle works in the space between worlds: between waking and sleeping, between the known and the sensed, between what is visible and what is true. Its power is greatest in those in between moments, the threshold of sleep, the hush just before dawn, the moment a dream image lingers on the edge of memory.
Reading the flame: A cool, luminous flame with a clear blue silver shimmer at its base is the deepest sign of lunar power fully active. A flame that appears to pulse gently, expanding and contracting in rhythm, is considered a sign that the Moon herself is present in the working. A very still, mirror like flame means the dreaming channel is deeply open and undisturbed. Smoke that rises in a single, perfectly straight column is one of the most auspicious signs the silver candle can produce, in many traditions it means the message sent has been received in the spiritual realm with absolute clarity.
Mugwort, handle with intention. Mugwort is gentle but genuinely powerful. First time users often report unusually vivid and emotionally intense dreams in the nights following their first silver candle working with mugwort present. This is normal and is the herb doing exactly what it is meant to do, opening what was closed, surfacing what was buried. If the dreams feel overwhelming rather than instructive, reduce the mugwort quantity and use a smaller sachet. Do not use mugwort if pregnant.
The silver candle and feminine healing. Of all the candles in this series, the silver candle carries the most direct connection to the divine feminine, to the cycles of the body, the wisdom of emotional knowing, and the deep ancestral feminine power that moves through lineages of women across generations. For rituals of feminine healing, recovering from trauma to the feminine self, reconnecting with cycles that have been disrupted, or honouring female ancestors, the silver candle is without equal. Burn it with white flowers, speak the names of the women who came before you, and allow whatever arises to arrive without judgment.
How the silver candle sits within the full candle series. Consider the silver candle the key that unlocks the others. Before any major ritual cycle, whether black for protection, green for abundance, red for passion, or any other, a silver candle working that opens your intuitive channel and clears your energy field prepares the spiritual ground for that work to be received more deeply and answered more clearly. It is the candle of preparation, of inner readiness, and of the deep listening without which all outer action is only half as powerful as it could be.
